A Beautiful Friendship
by David Weber
I always enjoy reading David Weber. Any book about the treecats is an instant need-to-read for me.
I recommend you buy this book. Run, don’t walk and get to Amazon or your local bookstore and grab your copy.
If you are in Australia, check out Fishpond.com.au - A Beautiful Friendship to buy this book.
I loved reading about Stephanie, the first person ever to bond with a treecat. I found out how Stephanie met and bonded with Lionheart and why she did. We learnt more of treecat society and how they look on the human interlopers to their planet. This is a Young Adult book but whoever said only the young can read them are silly. It’s a book I loved reading.
We find out why the Harrington’s arrived on Sphinx, how the Harrington Steading was created and David made real the ancestors of Honor Harrington.
This was a great book to read. David’s portrayal of Stephanie totally captured how a smart, teenage girl gets her own way (most of the time) and how she faces the consequences of her actions. Her concern and love for her family and Lionheart is real and is a wonderful read.
I also found out more about the Ranger’s of Sphinx and just what Sphinx was like then for the newly arrived Harrington family. As always with David’s characters, they are real, you can see them as real people and you want the good guys to win and the bad guys to lose.
What’s A Beautiful Friendship about?
Stephanie Harrington who wanted to be a forest ranger on her home world of Meyerdahl, ends up relocating with her parents to Sphinx in the Star Kingdom of Manticore. It was an exciting opportunity for her parents but not what she had planned for herself. Sphinx is a planet that hadn’t been explored very much due to a plague and was full of new species just waiting to be discovered.
However, many of those new species were very dangerous and her parents grounded her, with no exploration without an adult to supervise her. In an attempt to keep her distracted, her mother interests Stephanie in the “Great Disappearing Celery Mystery” and Stephanie’s investigations ends up with the biggest discovery any would be ranger could want: an intelligent alien species.
The Great Disappearing Celery Mystery is solved by Stephanie when she finds out that treecats have a taste for celery, something she can’t really understand.
After the treecats are ‘discovered’ they are the focus of international scrutiny with Stephanie and Lionheart the centre of attention. Some of it positive but some of it very dangerous for Stephanie, Lionheart, her friends and the treecats. Threatening the friends and family of any Harrington is not a smart thing to do.
Things are definitely getting interesting on Sphinx. Have a read of A Beautiful Friendship and let me know if you loved it as much as I did.

Hi Lisa
It’s a great read. I think your boys would enjoy it also
A beautiful friendship does sound like a great read. I love to read, however I seem to find very little time these days to do it.
I love the idea of Stephanie connecting with tree cat, and having that connection, because at the end of the day, that’s exactly the way it is – we are all connected.
